Why lines matter more than the total

Two quotations with the same total can cover very different work. A lump-sum "package" line hides quantities, so you cannot compare it or check it at handover. Anything not written down is easy to bill later as an extra. Ask for every missing item in writing, with a quantity and a rate, before you pay a deposit.
